FrameMaker in the Press
- Knowledge@Wharton, January 20, 2010 -- Adobe Co-founder John
Warnock on the Competitive Advantages of Aesthetics and the 'Right'
Technology
"
Knowledge@Wharton:
Shortly afterwards, you made a couple of major acquisitions with
Aldus and later FrameMaker. What drove those?
Warnock: In the case of Aldus, it was just getting a jumpstart
into document production. In the case with FrameMaker, the FrameMaker
architecture was infinitely better -- infinitely better -- than
the Aldus architecture. I could never get anybody except the
ex-Frame employees at Adobe to understand that the architecture
was fundamentally more sound in FrameMaker than in Aldus. The
Aldus side won, essentially, with [the development of Adobe's
page layout product] InDesign. We're still trying to catch up
to FrameMaker.

- Communicator,
December 2009 -- CMS integration for FrameMaker by Andy
Lewis and Alex Masycheff
"... However, as
the adoption rate of FrameMaker as a DITA authoring tool grows,
more CCMS vendors are beginning to consider integration with
FrameMaker. They have good reason to do so: a survey conducted
by Scriptorium Publishing found that over 60% of DITA implementers
are using FrameMaker as a DITA authoring tool, while over 62%
are planning to use FrameMaker in the future. ..." [Review]
- Technical Communication Suite blog, December 4, 2009 -- FrameMaker Server 9 by Mahesh

"...Although both
Adobe FrameMaker 9 and FrameMaker Server 9 software share the
same technology and even the same installation CD, they differ
in the permitted use for which they are licensed.

Suite 2 by Eric Brown
"... While other
solutions are available for creating various technical media,
one will be hard pressed to find a comprehensive set of applications
that does not end up as a disparate mess of incompatibility and
headaches. The Technical Communications Suite 2 creates an inviting
working environment free of complications, snags, and the need
for additional applications outside the suite allowing users
to focus on creating media for an ever shrinking world on a time

"If youre
fortunate enough not to use Word, it seems the only other decent
choice for technical writing is Adobes Framemaker. However,
some of Frames quirks make Word look almost welcoming.
Heres a running list of the things Id like to see

- Fastware Project, February 21, 2009 -- FrameMaker. Again.
"... My sense is
that, overall, the ratio of time spent writing to time spent
fighting with the authoring technology is likely to be best with
FrameMaker. The more things change, the more they stay the same,
the saying goes, and certainly that's been the case for me and
book-writing. For at least the last 10 years, each time I've
finished a book using FM, I've vowed not to use it again. The
next time I got ready to start a book, I investigated the alternatives
and talked to authors for recommendations. Each time I came away
with the impression that there was no choice I was likely to
find less unpleasant than Frame. " ... [blog post]

Attention, Adobe!
"... So heres
what I propose, Adobe. Offer a Mac Upgrade option

out cash for Photoshop & Illustrator upgrades. Offer FrameMaker
9 for $800 to those with valid Mac FM serial numbers, thus subsidizing
the purchase of the extra software required to make it work on
my Mac." ... [blog post]

February 9, 2009 -- Adobe FrameMaker 9 -- Product Review
by Tom Arah
"... There's still
a long way to go before FrameMaker fully recovers from its years
in the wilderness, but version 9 is the major overhaul that the
program was crying out for. This brings its own problems in terms
of foibles and bugs, and users would do well to wait for a 9.1
release for the most obvious of these to be ironed out. Step
back, though, and the launch of version 9 is great news: FrameMaker
can now look forward to a future as illustrious as its past."

February 2, 2009 -- FrameMaker 9 Review by Sheila
Loring
"... FrameMaker
9 is certainly a significant upgrade for FrameMaker users. The
CMS integration, CMYK support, DITA 1.1 support, and the PDF
comments are compelling. What concerns me is the buggy features
and inconsistent, inefficient interface. These issues add up
to a lot of hassle for FrameMaker users. I recommend evaluating
FrameMaker 9 to see if the features are compelling enough for
you to upgrade and then wait for patch releases before using
it for production." ... [review: PDF, 1.75MB]
